About the School
School Mission Statement
Mission Valley School offers alternative learning opportunities for elementary and middle school students who want to work outside of the traditional school setting. This alternative is built on personalized strategies, rigorous standards and outcomes relevant to the student. We provide independent study for grades TK-8, where students and parents work at home in partnership with a credentialed teacher. Experienced Mission Valley teachers prepare, monitor and implement programs that enrich, challenge and inspire students to achieve personalized academic achievement.
School Profile
Lompoc is located 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles in Santa Barbara County. The Lompoc Unified School District strives to provide a quality education for all its students with a wide range of programs and a talented staff dedicated to the needs of students. The district serves students in grades K-12 living in the city of Lompoc; the communities of Vandenberg Village, Mesa Oaks, Mission Hills; Vandenberg Air Force Base; and rural areas adjacent to these communities.
Mission Valley School offers independent-study options in education for students in grades TK-8. These alternatives are built on personalized learning strategies, rigorous standards and relevance for each student. For students in grades TK-8, parents serve as home teachers in partnership with MVS supervising teacher lessons, preparation and instruction. All MVS students are expected to meet with a supervising teacher for approximately one hour a week, which is spent evaluating the completed prior week’s work and assigning the next week’s lessons.
Since MVS is a school within the Lompoc Unified School District, students can attend classes and programs at MVS and their resident school through dual-enrollment or concurrent enrollment (grades 7-8), which allows them access to school activities, assemblies, arts, athletics, clubs, music, drama and other classes. Monthly student seminars, workshops and social events are scheduled through MVS to provide student opportunities to be with others who learn in the same manner and have social activities together.
Parents and students may also receive supplemental instruction through appropriate curriculum, access to supportive and experienced teachers, workshops, extra learning materials, networking opportunities and newsletters to assist in their student’s education.
MVS is an optional educational placement with continuous enrollment throughout the year. Students or families may contact MVS for information or to schedule an informational meeting. Mission Valley School is committed to providing a strong instructional program for all students to ensure excellence in alternative education.
